LA 242: Spring 2025
The Implementation Strategies class (LA 242 Spring 2025) designed and constructed a 5,000 sq. ft. bioswale on campus. Students determined grading, materials, and planting design for the swale. Designs were first presented to the campus landscape architect and landscape manager. During construction, students completed fine grading, assembled gabions, harvested rocks to fill the gabions, and placed steel plate weirs for water control. They also installed the planting.
Plants were researched and chosen for distinct microclimate zones within the bioswale (for example, the basin, berm, and side slopes). Grading proposed strategies for movement, stalling, and infiltration of water using existing drains and proposed check dam locations.
